God's strategies for success!

Hihi! It seems 2 me lk the blog is a bit dead. Tsk tsk..

Well well, we can't have that, can we? So thought i better go do something abt it then and start blogging again. Haha.

Anyway, this piece of mine is loooooooooooooooong overdued but i guess its better late than never...

So here goes, this is part 4 of God's strategies for success! May this word come forth and bless u greatly in life!!

4.BE CORRECTED BY YOUR DEFEATS
(written by Rick Warren and adapted by yours truly)

It is often said that in life; we must always learn from our mistakes. In Joshua 1:7, God says to Joshua in His prep talk “Be strong and very courageous and be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you. Don’t turn from it to the right or to the left [don’t get off track] that you may be successful wherever you go.” In short, God is actually telling Joshua 2 be careful and not get sidetracked. Even when you make a mistake, don’t get off-course!!!

Of cos mistakes are part and parcel of life. Everybody fails and make mistakes. If you blow something up, all i can say is... "Welcome to the human race!" We all make mistakes. We all commit blunders time and again. The bible says “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”

Heres an interesting fact for all of u: There’s an entire industry that makes a profit on your mistakes and they're built around the fact that you’re imperfect. Stop and think for a moment what industry im talking abt.

Haha, no worries. I'll tell u anyway...It’s the eraser/correction tape industry. Lets say if everyone were perfect, we wouldn’t be needing erasers or correction tapes at all. Cos nobody would ever make any mistakes. So as u can see, there’s an entire industry making a profit out of your boo-boos!

Successful people learn from their failures in life. They learn from their mistakes. Therefore, Be corrected by your defeats!!!

Thomas Edison once said “Don’t call it(mistakes) a failure. Call it an education!” Yes thats right! Don’t call it a mistake; call it an education, a learning opportunity for you! On a fun side though, If that’s true, some of you will be highly educated geniuses!!! LOL

KK, Lets bring it back 2 our book of reference here. Joshua 7 is an example in Joshua’s life that I’m talking about here. In it, we have the story of the defeat of the Israelites n a little town called Ai. Heres the background 2 the story: Joshua and the Israelites had gone into the Promised Land and they were winning battles right and left. They were knocking their enemies out. They took over Jericho, which was the most fortified city in the country and they were triumphant everywhere they went. In short, they seemed invincible.

Then complacency started to creep in and they started to become overconfident. They started saying “Look at what we’re doing!” instead of saying “Look at what God’s doing!” Thus, it gave them an attitude that says “We can do it, we don’t need God. We’re doing this all on our very own.”

So they came to a little town called Ai with several hundred people in it. They said “That’s nothing. Let’s just send out a platoon to wipe those guys out. We don’t even need to send out our army.” They sent out their platoon and guess what? They were embarrassed to death. They lost the battle. They were failures. They turned tail and ran.

Joshua then comes back and cries before the Lord, “What’s happening, God? You brought us through the Red Sea. You brought us through the desert. Forty years and You brought us to the Promised Land. We’re winning big victories and then some little bit town comes along and embarrasses us.”

Lets take a break here and reflect upon the story... I want 2 show u guys a truth here: It’s the Ai’s of life that often makes us weary and down, not the Jericho’s. Think abt what i just said, It’s the little things in life that somehow seems 2 drag us down, isnt it? I mean things in life that u thought u were confident of handling but somehow u ended up making a mess out of it. Aww...

Back to our story: In Joshua 7:5, Joshua then tore his clothes and he fell face down on the ground before the ark of the Lord and remained there until the evening. He’s praying and weeping and then God comes to him in verse 10 saying, “Stand up, what are you doing on your face?”

This is what God is actually saying to Joshua here “Joshua, shut up! Cut it out!! I don’t want to hear it!!! Get this straight; I don’t want to hear this you feeling sorry for yourself... Get up and do something about it!!!

In verse 11, God then says “Israel has sinned and they’ve violated my covenant.” The children of Israel then found out that one man named Achan had kept some of the spoils of the war for personal profit, when they were taking the city of Jericho. This was an act of defiance against God as He had told them not to keep any of the spoils of war in that particular battle. One man disobeyed the Lord and his disobedience affected the rest of the people. Somebody say "OH NO!"

Joshua then got up, found Achan and his family and confronted him with this sin. They punished the man and from that point on, God gave them victory again.

So what’s the main point of the story here? The point here is: Even when you have been defeated, when you’ve failed, when you’ve made a mistake, simply discover the cause and take the appropriate action. That was what made Joshua a successful person.

I want to share with all of u, 2 things that great achievers do in life:

1. They’re big enough to admit it when they’re wrong. They can say “I was wrong.” They can admit error.
2. They can do something about it. They don’t just stand there and moan and groan abt their failures. They do something about it. They learn from their mistakes.

We must always have the mentality to learn more from our failures in life, than we do from our successes. I cringe at some of the mistakes that I have made in my life, some poor judgements, dumb things, and things that I’ve learned from those things. So how do u go abt moving on from your shortcomings? 1 tip for all of u: Learn Fast! It doesn’t take me long in doing the same mistake many times before i get wise and think, “That doesn’t work!” God says, “Learn from your mistakes!”

It’s wise to learn from your mistakes; however, it’s even wiser to learn from the mistakes of other people. It’s wise to learn from experience, but it’s even wiser to learn from the experience of others. Why? Cos you don’t possibly have all the time in the world to make all the mistakes yourself. Life is just too short. Let some other people make the mistakes and you can then come forth and learn from them.

One interesting way would be to read biographies.(take note: your school textbooks are your priority k? Haha) Another way would be to always remain open and teachable. Ask God for insight when other people have fallen short in their ways. Say to God, “What should/can I learn from that?”

I’ve learned that you can always learn from anybody, if you just know the right question(s) to ask. I do believe everyone of you could teach me something if I knew the right question(s) to ask you.

Be corrected by your defeats.

end of part four...

Hey all! Today we are going to continue our Study Guide Journey! *giggles*
Well, i'm sure you all have read lesson 1 and 2 haven't you? Did it help? Hopefully it did! (:

Lets continue to lesson 3-5 shall we? (:

Lesson 3 - Fitness

·Aerobic exercise

Your brain needs tons of OXYGEN to function effectively. Aerobic exercise pushes your body to deliver oxygen better to the brain through blood flow and bigger lungs. Your brain also adapts to this new stress by increasing its capacity!!

You should also stretch occasionally during study breaks to better your blood flow.

·Posture

NEVER slouch when studying! Affects oxygen delivered to brain.

(i bet you didnt know that :P well, neither did i :x)

·Strength training

It is a good idea to train your forearms and wrist flexors as they will aid you in writing really, really fast during the exams without tiring out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lesson 4 - Rest

While sleeping, your body undergoes a tremendous amount of healing and repair, while stockpiling the essential chemicals required for the next day. Sleep deprivation is a sure way to kill your brain!!!

· Sleep: 7-9hrs daily

· NEVER NAP FOR MORE THAN 90 min (Makes you really tired after that)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lesson 5 - Music

Music is important as it stimulates the right brain (creativity). It creates the mood for studying by altering your hormonal and mental state.

· Studying/Learning: Classical music (Theta state of mind, semi-conscious state)

· Before Tests/Exam: Techno Superfast music (Triggers fight-or-flight response)

I stress this: your music must have NO LYRICS!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, our journey ends here for today, hopefully you guys can catch these few tips that Professor Ernest has kindly prepared for us. Till Next Time! ((:

-Sheryl-
Ps:/If you guys want the music "Heart Of The Forest" let me know kay? i have it.(:

Upcoming movies for the remainder of 2009

Hi everybody. Wow, it feels lk ages since i last wrote on the blog. Lol, i hope i havent lost my touch. Haha. So... I guess for my comeback post, i shall try 2 keep things short and sweet for all. Winks*

Ok, today i would like 2 bring every1 a list of the upcoming movies of 2009. (whatever that is left of the year of cos) Hope all of u will enjoy reading it k? =D

Note: The list includes the Singapore release dates of the movies and the links to the trailers respectively (where possible). So do mark down the dates for the movies that u are intending 2 watch!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------
Israel's edit (15/07):

My brother Josiah commented that Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince wasn't in this list. Thus, I've decided to add it in ;)

Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince
Release date: 16 July 2009 --> Jedidiah's and Josiah's birthday

Synopsis: Lord Voldermort is wreaking havoc throughout Britain as Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts. The pressure to defeat the Dark Lord grows stronger in the young wizard. Using an old Potions Book which previously belonged to the 'Half-Blood Prince', Harry is able to increase his magical knowledge and prepare for battle. However, he must first help Dumbledore discover the secret to Voldermort's quest for immortality - the location of his Horcruxes. But the quest for the Horcruxes and the resulting battle at Hogwarts produce a tragic outcome - leading Harry to believe that he must head out on his own to conquer the Dark Lord.

Editor's Comment: Fans of the famous Harry Potter series would be extremely excited for this movie! I remember spending entire days just reading Harry Potter books. I believe this movie would be worth watching. This is one movie you don't want to miss!

P.S I heard that the tickets for tomorrow's show are already sold out.
-------------------------------------------------------------

G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra (06/8/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdvMpL4wtMg

Synopsis: This is a live-action film based on the action figure G.I. Joe, an American soldier. The movie revolves around an international co-ed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organisation headed by a Scottish arms dealer.

Editor’s comment: Does that name G.I. Joe ring in a bell in your head? If it does, then congrats! You must have played with the action figure or watched the cartoon series before. For those of u who have never heard of it…don’t fret, all’s not lost. This movie looks set to churn out lots of butt-kicking action that will keep all of you action movies fans out there satisfied.

Up (06/8/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7kW0mUzIDI

Synopsis: This movie is a comedy/adventure film about a 78-year man named Carl Fredricksen, who has spent almost his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe. Due to his age, he thinks life has "passed him by". However, one day, a twist of fate comes into his life. He meets an 8-year old wilderness explorer named Russell, who changes his outlook on life.

Editor’s comment: Just imagine…What will life be like without an animation film from Disney Pixar’s productions? I recalled Weiren once told me this “Any movie from Pixar is good, so you can watch it.” Well, that statement is true enough. Time and time again, Pixar has delivered or exceeded the expectations of many with its films. Think movies like Ratatouille and Wall-e, and you will know what I mean. Haha, I’m so looking forward to this film.

Ps: The boy in the film is super cute la. Haha, just check out the photo and the trailer, and u will kw what i mean.

Final destination 4 aka Final Destination: Death Trip 3D(27/8/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m_rkiPqGdc&feature=channel_page

Synopsis: Nick O'Bannon and his friends narrowly escape a grisly death at the race track when Nick sees a horrific vision of the future. But fans of the three previous three films know that Death doesn't like to be cheated, and now the characters will have to struggle to survive.

Editor’s comment: Ok, I know I said it many times le but this movie is one that I’m looking forward to. Just for the record, I’m not sadistic or anything but I just like the storyline in the final destination series. So for those who like final destination movies as I do, let’s rejoice, Part 4 is going to be released this year! In 3-D somemore, HAHA!

Ps: Oh no! This film is being released this film during the F1 season. Any1 still fancy 2 go and watch a race??? Shudder*

Astroboy (05/11/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFjMAkHRu3Q&feature=channel_page

Synopsis: Set in futuristic Metro City, AstroBoy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named Tenma. Powered by positive "blue" energy, Astroboy is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly.

Editor’s comment: Oh boy, this is one movie that I’m struggling to comment on. Cos I just realized that this movie was based on an anime character and I don’t watch anime!!! Howeverrrr….maybe people like Sunthari (anime expert) and Ya hong (astroboy fan) can tell you all more about it ba. Haha.

Saw 6 (05/11/09)

No details about the movie as of present moment

The Twilight saga: New Moon (03/12/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSFMmkMfQ5Q&feature=channel_page

Synopsis: Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly, she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and subsequently finds her loyalties tested.

Editor’s comment: At last you fans of twilight, I’m sure every single one of you is in full anticipation of the sequel. Although, all of u might have already read the book but I’m sure you all know that pictures often say a thousand words… So why don't u go forth and see the movie too??? New moon is hitting the big screens soon!

Storm Warriors 2 aka 風雲 II (17/12/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La_J77JDOZk&feature=channel_page

Synopsis:
10 years on since the first movie, Ekin Cheng & Aaron Kwok return as Wind & Cloud respectively, to fight a Japanese warlord intent on invading China.

Editor's comment: Wha, almost 10 years has passed since part 1 was shown. Though its been so long ago, I still have vague recollections of the movie. However, there is 1 thing i can definately remember and that is plenty of sword fighting action plus cool special effects in that film. Therefore, one can expect no less from this sequel. Yet another recommended film for all of u action movie fans out there!

Sherlock holmes (24/12/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQbmFAE5WI&feature=fvst

Synopsis: The story tells of notable detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Dr John Watson who engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis, whose plot is a threat to England.

Editor’s comment: I don’t know how many of you have read the book before but Sherlock Holmes is indeed a very classic character to hit the major screens. Although not much is revealed about the film, one can surely expect lots of suspense from it. Why? Cos it’s elementary, my dear Watson!

Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel (24/12/09)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRVNjhGH3ow&feature=channel_page

Synopsis: The 3 chipmunks: Alvin, Simon and Theodore return in this sequel and this time, they must put aside music superstardom to return back to school. Then, they are tasked with saving the school's music program, by competiting for $25,000 in a battle of music bands. Their unlikely opponents come in the form of 3 other female singing chipmunks. Watch as how romantic and musical sparks begin 2 fly when the 2 teams face off.

Editor's comment: Haha, I have nothing much 2 comment le since the synopsis pretty much tells u more or less of what the movie is about. However, i do feel that this is a great movie 2 watch during the end of year festive season. What better way 2 end the year with lots of laughs and plenty of squeakylicious (no such word btw!) fun??? Do consider watching if u feel bored during X'mas!

Ok, finally I'm done. Im so glad 2 be back 2 blogging. It certainly helped me 2 exercise my fingers rather than training up my muscles and abs the whole day. Haha. Anyway, i just hoped that all of u had fun reading this post. You can treat it as a half time break from all the study tips if u want, haha.

In the meantime, I just want 2 say 2 every1 all the best in your studies and may all of u excel in the things u do in life! :)

With lots of love and plenty of kisses,
Qm

Soar Higher!

Yay! We have a new Title Image!!! XD

Indeed, we are in a season of empowerment, and many of us will experience breakthroughs! Be it depression, low self-esteem, negative thinking, parental objection; God will take us higher!

"A desire is something you can't live without."
- Ong Wei Ren

But how are we going to experience this breakthrough? It's simple: just DESIRE after it. A desire is not passive; you don't wait and hope it will come. That is just wishful thinking. A desire is very active! Begin to seek God for your miracle and keep on confessing the Word!

So why am I sharing this? Cause I need to hear it myself :X

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."
- Matthew 7:7 -

Let's SOAR HIGHER together!

Study Tips #1 and #2

Welcome to our very first post on study tips, prepared by our cellgroup scholar, Ernest Wong!

I'm sure all of us have an innate desire to shine for Christ in our studies, and to become among top of our cohort. But perhaps we do not feel that we can do it, because of our past results. Let me submit to you that IT IS POSSIBLE! All things are possible to him who believes! You must have faith in God, but also in yourself!

There are a total of 8 lessons that Ernest prepared, and today we will discuss lessons #1 and #2.

Are you ready? Here they are:

#1 A New Mindset

"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he..."
- Proverbs 23:7 -

This is the most important lesson if you want to shine for Christ in your campus!

If you want to be an "A" student, start behaving like one! As quoted from pastor: "Stop sitting around the premises waiting for the promises". We have to add the works to our faith! Praying for "A"s without proper studying will only lead to frustration.

Your intelligence is LIMITLESS!
Here are some facts about your brain:
  • It has the power of 1,000,000,000,000 (no typo) Pentium 4 laptops!
  • You only use 1-2% (3% if you're a genius) of it
Really begin to believe that you have the tools to do well!

Here are videos of how amazing your brain is:

#2 Food for the brain
Ever wondered why you feel so lethargic after lunch or "burnt-out" after a meal?

If you want to get the best of your studying and concentration, you'll have to feed your brain with right stuff.

Here are some foods that KILL your brain and mood to study properly:

1) SWEET/Starchy foods

If you find honey, eat just enough - too much of it, and you will vomit
- Pro 25:16 -

Blood sugar levels play a key role in your concentration and state of mind. Your brain needs lots of sugar (glucose) to operate; more than 2x of the rest of your body! Eating sugar-rich foods is a sure way to put you to sleep!

From the graph, high GI foods (Starchy, Candy...) raise your blood sugar up before crashing down rapidly, depriving your brain of glucose and making you "burnt out".

The KEY to controlling blood sugar levels and to improve your concentration is FIBRE, which is found in VEGETABLES, FRUITS, and WHOLE GRAINS. So please eat them together with your meals to avoid zoning off ^^.

2) SALTY foods
Ever seen students munching on chips as they mug? That's the worst.

Besides making you thirst (and going to the bathroom more), salty foods DEPLETE your body's energy sources (esp. your brain). You will need twice the effort to do the same amount of concentration.

This has to do with the nerve impulses your brain makes - I'll spare you the details on this one. You can ask me personally for details =)

Brain Food:
- Fish/Seafood
Fish is a rich source of essential fats which your brain loves!

- Fluids (H2O)
Most important! A lack of water leads to dehydration would result in decreased Neuro-function.

Finally,

NEVER EVER SKIP BREAKFAST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you Ernest for your advice! Stay tuned for more study tips in the future! :)
